Cara Delevingne Got Drunk at a Wedding When She Was 8

Cara Delevingne is an open book about her sobriety journey, recently going as far as admitting that her first experience with alcohol came before she even hit her teenage years.

While speaking with The Sunday Times, the model recalled being at her aunt's wedding in 2001 as a bridesmaid, where she got drunk at the young age of 8 years old. “You know I got drunk that day,” she told the outlet. “I was eight, what a crazy age to get drunk.”

Delevingne has since has been candid about her struggles with sobriety. The model checked herself into a rehab facility after a 2022 incident, when photos of her walking around a Los Angeles airport in socks went viral. She was heading to London after attending the Burning Man Festival. The actress says those images helped her to become sober.

“It was a stupid decision to go straight from a festival to work. I should have waited a day. But it was going to happen to me anyway, there were plenty of photos out there of me looking wasted," she said. “Listen, I signed up for this, this is my job, it’s what I do. But without that would I be sober now? I would have never been Sally Bowles in the West End, I’m super proud of that.”

Before getting sober, Delevingne said that substances helped her deal with some of the pressures of her life in the spotlight. “I used to think drugs and alcohol helped me cope…but they didn’t, they kept me sad and super depressed. I feel like I’ve got my power back and I’m not being controlled by other things,” she explained.

Now, it doesn't even phase the 32-year-old to be in the presence of people who decide to drink. “I love being around people who are drinking, it doesn’t mess me up,” Delevingne said, when asked if it triggers her. “I’ve done more in the past two years than I ever have: Glastonbury, Burning Man, and Coachella. [Glastonbury] smelt bad, my feet hurt and I didn’t stay up so late, but it was just as much fun. I never want my life to change in that way.”
