Carolyn Bessette Never Got to Meet Jackie Kennedy

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy might have married into the Kennedy family, but, surprisingly to some, she never got to meet her husband John F. Kennedy's mother, Jackie. In a new book, titled Once Upon A Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, it's revealed that JFK Jr. didn't introduced his then-girlfriend to his mom before the former First Lady's death in May 1994.

According to the biography, Bessette-Kennedy and John began dating on and off in the early '90s while he was still seeing his former girlfriend Daryl Hannah, whom he officially broke up with in 1994. And Carolyn apparently wasn't happy about the overlap between the two relationships, nor the fact that it kept her from meeting Jackie. "Carolyn became increasingly irked that he wouldn't introduce her to his mother," wrote author Elizabeth Beller. "'I took him to meet my mom,’ Carolyn told a friend."

In fact, Carolyn was so bothered that she would often breakup with John over the issue. “The on, off-ness of their relationship between '92 and '94, partially, was sometimes off because [Bessette-Kennedy] would break up with him over the fact that he wasn't introducing her to Jackie,” Beller explained while speaking with People. “[She was] thinking, ‘This can't be serious if he's not really introducing me to his mother.’”

Beller added, “Carolyn wasn't going to put up with anything like that. One has to protect oneself."

It's a decision that John reportedly wished he could take back. “I know that he did regret it,” Beller said. “That's one of the things that he said to several friends, one of his main regrets was not introducing the two of them.”

Ultimately, the couple was able to move on and got married in 1996 during a secret wedding inside the First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, a mile off the coast of Georgia. Less than three years later, Bessette-Kennedy and John's love story came to a tragic end when they, along with Carolyn's sister, Lauren, died in a plane crash off of Martha's Vineyard on July 16, 1999.
