Jennifer Aniston Wore the Pants Trend That Has Big Things in Store for Spring

I’m about to say something controversial: Sometimes, I get bored of pants. Gasp. Yes, I know they’re comfy, practical, and pretty much essential to anyone’s wardrobe, but when I want to wear a piece with a little more something-something to it, I don’t always think of bottoms as the first item of clothing. Skirts usually have more flair to them, but then again, they’re not always the most functional. So, what does one do? Thankfully, a recent Jennifer Aniston sighting proved to be a saving grace as I was struggling to find an answer.

Aniston was photographed leaving a Broadway performance in New York City on Friday, wearing a simple look that’s perfect for this time of year. In fact, I’ll be recreating it the minute I return to the Big Apple from my Minnesota getaway. On top, Aniston sported a dark turquoise wool coat that’s the ideal in-between topper for this often confusing transitional period. It’s medium-weight and can be thrown over the shoulders if it gets too warm for a, well, coat. Underneath, she wore a fitted black shirt, rounding out the look with black heeled booties and, of course, the star of the look, those side-slit black pants that I’m totally into. Sure, you have to zoom in to see them, but once you do, you'll be obsessed, too.

Slit-hem pants are nothing new, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth spotlighting again, especially when seen on an icon like Aniston — and the fact that said sighting aligned with my current pants debacle couldn’t have been more perfect. In the past, celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Gemma Chan have also been spotted in slit pants, though I’m fond of Aniston’s as they lean more formal because of their sleek, black design, with a deep cut along the side that added flare (and thus, movement) to her simple bottoms.

A slit hem is a super simple design detail that has the power to totally level-up a pair of pants. But, as we know, it doesn’t take a lot to take something from meh to wow, and the addition of a slit, small or big, totally transforms bottoms — whether skinnies, leggings, wide-leg, or denim — from straightforward and classic to something more fun and daring, especially if you go with an option with a full-leg slit. Bold!

What’s more, the slashed hem also presents the perfect opportunity to let your shoes shine. Our footwear often gets concealed underneath our pant’s hem, but with the slit, they have the chance to stand out just a bit more. Plus, the bottoms pair well with all shoe styles; go with sneakers if you want something cool-girl casual or sleek black heels for an office-friendly approach.

All that to say, slit bottoms are going to be huge this season — and beyond. So, shop more split-hem pants from Spanx, Commando, and Mother.
